New Delhi: Seven players, including former world No. 1 Kidambi Srikanth and two-time Commonwealth Games gold medalist Ashwini Ponnappa, have been caught by Kovid-19 and they are left with no option but to show them their way out of the India Open. All names have been withdrawn. The Badminton World Federation (BWF) said the doubles partners of the players would also be withdrawn as they were believed to be in close contacts.
The five other players who have tested positive are Ritika Rahul Thakar, Tarissa Jolly, Mithun Manjunath, Simran Aman Singh, Khushi Gupta.
“The mandatory RT-PCR test of the players carried out on Tuesday resulted in positive test. Close contact of seven players, including doubles partners, have also been withdrawn from the tournament,” the BWF said in a statement.

“Players will not be replaced in the main draw and their opponents will be given a walkover for the next round,” it added.
The Badminton Association of India (BAI) also later issued a statement confirming the development.
The India Open began on January 11 and its second round matches will be played on Thursday at the KD Jadhav Indoor Hall in New Delhi.
