All England Open: Gopichand and Jolly pair out after semi-final loss

Birmingham, March 20 (ANI): Women’s doubles pair of P Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly crashed out of the ongoing All England Open Championship after losing in the semi-final clash at the Utility Arena, Birmingham here on Saturday.

Playing on Court 6, the Indian pair were defeated by China’s Zhang Shuxian and Zheng Yu 21-17, 21-16 in a match that lasted 51 minutes.

With this defeat, Gopichand and Jolly are out of the tournament while the Chinese pair will face Japan’s Nami Matsuyama and Chiharu Shida in the final.

Earlier, Indian shuttler Lakshya Sen also entered the men’s singles final of the ongoing All England Open Championship with a 21-13, 12-21, 21-19 win over Malaysia’s Lee Ji Jia in a match that lasted one hour and 16 minutes.

The last time an Indian reached an All England final was in 2015, she was Saina Nehwal where she finished as runner-up and the last time an Indian won the All England Badminton Championship 2 was Pullela Gopichand in 2001. Only two Indians have won this tournament. Prakash Padukone in 1980 and Pullela Gopichand in 2001. Lakshya Sen is just one win away from being the third Indian. Lakshya has also become the fifth Indian to enter the All England final.
