TikTok parent ByteDance is working on a new app to help users discover new music. According to a trademark application with the US Patent and Trademark Office, the app will be called ‘TikTok Music’ although the exact launch date is unclear.
It will also compete against music streaming giants such as Spotify, Apple and Google. ByteDance already offers a music streaming app called Resso, which is still available to download in India.
How will ByteDance’s ‘TikTok Music’ be
TikTok Music by ByteDance will let users “live stream audio and video interactive media programming in the fields of entertainment, fashion, sports and current events”. It will offer a “downloadable mobile application providing podcast and radio broadcast content”.
If the TikTok Music app (‘TikTok Music’ App) is indeed working, we can expect to see it include some of the same tools that are already available on Resso.
For example, the Resso app offers a TikTok-like scrolling interface, and it shows content based on users’ browsing history – similar to Spotify and YouTube Music. It allows users to watch, download music for offline listening, and search for songs that are playing in the background.
Once the app is formally launched, Resso will continue to operate under the same name in India, while the Brazil-focused app may be rebranded. TikTok Music will aim to make a name for itself in major markets like the US and EU. App tracker AppBrain reveals that Resso already has over 100 million downloads globally.
Going by ByteDance’s expansion plans, we can expect the company to launch TikTok Music Originals similar to Spotify’s in-house content. All the songs available on the app will be available to use on the main TikTok app.
