Wimbledon 2023 in Hindi:
Marketa Vondrousova created history at Wimbledon by becoming the first unseeded player to win the women’s singles final. No female player had been able to do this before.

Marketa is a 24 year old Czech player; He did this feat by defeating Tunisian rival Ons Jaber in straight sets 6-4, 6-4. The question is, what is ‘Seeding’ (Seed System in Tennis) in the world of tennis?

When the seed speaks only a preference, then why is the seed not called ranking like in cricket? What is the difference between seed and ranking? Who is an unseeded player? Let’s try to know the answers to all these things.

Difference between seed and ranking

Actually, the seed is not the overall ranking of a player, but the ranking obtained in a tournament. These seeds are decided by the tournament organizers and are determined by the player’s current ranking in the world. The seed is used to rank players in a tournament. Seed is a temporary measure for a specific tournament, while rank is a long-term measure of a player’s performance.

Big seed gets benefit-

The higher the seed, the higher the seeding in that competition. The higher seeded player is given the best draw (match) in the tournament so that the higher seeded player reaches the end of the tournament. Higher seeded players can easily advance in tournaments by initially facing unseeded or lower seeded opponents.

In such a situation, a non-seeded player moving forward and winning the tournament is a big deal. Seeding is commonly used in major tournaments, such as Grand Slam events (such as Wimbledon, US Open, French Open and Australian Open) and some other prestigious tournaments.

How to get high seed-

The world’s top-ranked players are usually awarded higher seeds based on their rankings from recognized tennis governing bodies, such as the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) for men or the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) for women.

What is its advantage-

In the ‘seeding ladder’, higher seeded players face lower ranked opponents in the opening round. In such a situation, the possibility of initial reversal is reduced. Seeding also adds to the excitement of the tournament, as fans and players anticipate potential matches between higher-ranked players in the later stages of the competition.

However, it is important to note that upsets can still happen, as happened in the women’s singles final of Wimbledon yesterday, July 15. That’s why Marketa Vondrousova’s achievements become all the more magnified.
