New Delhi, May 27:
Former world number one Simona Halep crashed out of the French Open on Thursday. She could not resist the aggressive play of Chinese youngster Zheng Qinwen and suffered a 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 defeat in the second round.

Halep won the trophy at Roland Garros in 2018 before winning Wimbledon. She had last won against 19-year-old Zheng in Melbourne in January in straight sets.

The 30-year-old Romanian got off to a decent start by dominating the game, and took control against 74th ranked Zheng in the world.

But then the Chinese player’s racquet began to gain momentum, and Halep made many more mistakes that he hadn’t expected. Then Zheng did not look back.

Zheng won eight games in a row to take a 3–0 lead in the deciding set, with Halep winning just one more game.

“I’ve been working really hard, and it was really cool, it was my best performance. I’m happy today,” Zheng said in an interview on the court.

Halep also had trouble breathing during the third set and was tested for pulse and blood pressure on the court. He said that he had a panic attack.

“I didn’t know how to handle it, because I don’t get it often,” said Halep, smiling.

“I really don’t know why it happened, because I was leading the match. I was playing well. I couldn’t concentrate. After the match, (it) was tough. But now I’m good. I recovered, and I will learn from this incident.”

Zheng, making only her second major after making her Grand Slam debut at the Australian Open, will next face the winner of the match between local hope Alize Cornet and former Latvian champion Jelena Ostapenko.
