government has withdrawn UIDAI's earlier press release over Aadhaar misuse

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology said in a statement that it is withdrawing the press release advising not to share photocopies of Aadhaar as it may be misinterpreted. “In the press release, people were advised not to share their Aadhaar copy with any organization as it can be misused,” the ministry said. Instead, Aadhaar (Masked Aadhaar) representing only the last four digits of the Aadhaar number can be used.

In this, the first eight digits of the Aadhaar number are hidden and only the last four digits are visible, the statement said. But in view of the possibility of misinterpretation of this release, it is withdrawn with immediate effect. In a statement, the ministry said that the holders of Aadhaar cards issued by UIDAI are advised to exercise reasonable discretion in using only their Aadhaar number and sharing it with others.

A statement issued by the government said that the system of Aadhaar verification has made adequate arrangements to protect and safeguard the identity and privacy of the Aadhaar holder. Meanwhile, UIDAI said in its statement, holders of Aadhaar Card issued by UIDAI are advised to use their UIDAI Aadhaar numbers properly and be careful while sharing the same.

The notice issued by the Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology said that unlicensed private entities, hotels and cinema halls are not allowed to collect or keep copies of Aadhar cards.

“Only those organizations that have obtained a user license from the Unique Identification Authority of India can use Aadhaar to establish the identity of an individual,” the government said. The government asked citizens to verify that an organization has a valid user license from UIDAI before sharing their Aadhaar cards. However, after this new press release, there is a lot of confusion among the people.
