He can captain India if needed, remains calm on the field: Harbhajan

New Delhi. Former India bowler Harbhajan Singh believes that Hardik Pandya, who made Gujarat Titans (GT) champions in IPL 2022, is someone who can captain the Indian team anytime as a substitute. All-rounder Pandya was picked as the vice-captain for the Sri Lanka tour in 2021 but is yet to get any responsibility.

The 28-year-old Pandya was signed by the new franchise ahead of the mega auction. Leading the team in his first campaign, Pandya suffered just four defeats on his way to the title. He became the fourth Indian player to win the IPL trophy. Describing Pandya as the best captain of IPL 2022, Harbhajan Singh said in an interview with Sportskeeda, “Hardik Pandya has to be the best captain of IPL 2022. He showed intent as a captain. Whatever doubts were there regarding his fitness, He took them all away. His positive captaincy is a good sign for the future as he can captain Team India if needed.”
All-rounder Pandya made it to the Indian squad for the upcoming home T20I series against South Africa. The 2021 T20 World Cup did not go well for Pandya, where he was roped in as a batsman but he failed. After going through several months of rehabilitation, Pandya had regained full fitness before the start of IPL 2022.
Harbhajan said, “Pandya has a completely different personality from the field. But, when he is at it, he is a different captain. He is very serious and calm on the field. He showed how to take the team forward. He impressed most.” He will be seen playing in the five-match T20I series against the Proteas at home.
