The first Commonwealth Games were held in the Canadian city of Hamilton in 1930. At that time it was known as the British Empire Games. For this first competition, 11 countries sent a total of 400 athletes. Women only took part in swimming events. But India was not included in this year’s competition.

India’s entry in the Commonwealth Games in the year 1934

Since 1930, the Commonwealth Games have been held usually every four years. But it was not organized in 1942 and 1946 due to the Second World War.

After 1930, in 1934, the second Commonwealth Games i.e. British Empire Games were held in London. A total of 500 athletes from 16 countries including India participated in this edition.

These 16 countries were Australia, Bermuda, British Guiana, Canada, England, Northern Ireland, Newfound Land, New Zealand, Scotland, South Africa, Wales, India, Hong Kong, Jamaica, Zimbabwe and Trinidad.

However, India played under the British flag as India was then ruled by the British.

India participated in only two events wrestling and athletics.

Among the 17 countries, India opened its account with a bronze medal and remained in the 12th position.

Rashid Anwar won the bronze medal for India in the men’s 74 kg gram category.

From 1934 to 2018, India has won a total of 503 medals. These include 181 gold, 173 silver and 149 bronze.

India did not participate in the Commonwealth Games in 1950

India did not get any medal in the third British Empire Game i.e. Commonwealth Games held in 1938.

After this, due to the Second World War, the Commonwealth Games of 1942 and 1946, ie British Empire Games, could not be held.

India got independence in 1947 and India did not participate in the Commonwealth Games held in 1950.

Since independence, India has participated in most of the athletics in Commonwealth Games, many times India did not get success according to expectations. But there has been a lot of improvement in India’s performance in the following years.

India got two gold in Commonwealth Games 1958

Canada once again got the opportunity to organize the Commonwealth Games in 1954. The name of the competition held in the city of Vancouver was changed from British Empire Games to British Empire and Commonwealth Games.

Both India and Pakistan took part in it. This time also India’s account did not open. But in the year 1958, the Commonwealth Games held in Cardiff city of Wales helped a lot in giving India a new position in this competition.

In 1958, India won two gold and one silver medal.

Indian athlete Milkha Singh, popularly known as Flying Sikh, won the gold medal in the 440 meters race. This was the period when Milkha Singh was making his mark all over the world. Till date no Indian athlete has been able to repeat this feat.

The second gold medal was won by wrestler Leela Ram, who entered the heavyweight category.

Laxmikant Pandey won silver medal in wrestling itself. He was in the 74 kg category.

This year was also very important in terms of women’s participation, when Stephanie D’Souza and Elizabeth Davenport became the first women athletes from India to participate in the Commonwealth Games.

A total of 35 countries participated in the Commonwealth Games-1958 and India was at 8th place.

India’s medal tally in the 1966 Commonwealth Games in double digits

In 1962, the Commonwealth Games were held in Perth, Australia, but India did not participate in this competition.

By the year 1966, the British Empire had formally ended, so this edition of the Commonwealth Games is known as the British Commonwealth Games.

This 1966 edition was held in the city of Kingston, Jamaica and a total of 34 countries took part in it.

India won three gold, four silver and three bronze medals in the competition.

All three gold medals of India came in wrestling. Vishambhar Singh won the gold in 57 kg category, Bhim Singh in 100 kg category and Mukhtar Singh in 68 kg category. India finished sixth in this competition.

In 1970, the 9th Commonwealth Games were held in Edinburgh, Scotland.

This time too, India’s performance in the Commonwealth Games was responsible for wrestling. India got five gold medals in wrestling matches and the total number of medals was 12.

Apart from this, India got three silver and three bronze medals. 42 countries took part in this competition and India finished sixth.

The 10th edition of the Commonwealth Games was held in the city of Christchurch, New Zealand in 1974. In this competition, India won a total of 15 medals including 4 gold medals.

All four of them had come in gold wrestling. India remained at the sixth position this year as well.

In true sense, the Commonwealth Games was first held in its own name in 1978. This was the 11th edition of the Commonwealth Games and was held in the Canadian city of Edmonton.

India’s performance remained the same. He won five medals each in Gold, Silver and Bronze. Kenya, New Zealand and Scotland also performed as before.

Prakash Padukone won gold in badminton

For India, Prakash Padukone won gold in the men’s singles match of badminton and India got the bronze medal in the women’s doubles. E Karunakaran won a gold medal for India in 52 kg weightlifting. India got the remaining three gold and four silver medals in wrestling.

India got bronze medals in boxing and men’s long jump. A total of four new records were set in cycling, shooting and swimming. India was ranked sixth this time as well.

India won 16 medals in Brisbane Commonwealth Games

The Twelfth Commonwealth Games was held in Brisbane, Australia. India won a total of 16 medals, including five gold and eight silver medals.

India also won the gold medal in the men’s singles match of badminton this time, but this time it was shown by Syed Modi.

India got the remaining four gold medals in wrestling. India’s dominance in wrestling continued as it also won four silver and one bronze medals. India got three silvers in weightlifting. Apart from a bronze in boxing, he got a silver and a bronze in shooting.

India did not participate in the next Commonwealth Games held in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1986.

In 1990, weightlifting brought gold to India

The 14th edition of the Commonwealth Games was held in the New Zealand city of Auckland in 1990. In this edition, India performed well, winning a total of 13 gold medals, including 12 gold medals in weightlifting. Indian players also made five new records in this.

Apart from weightlifting, a gold was won by Ashok Pandit in shooting.

India finished fifth in this edition by winning a total of 32 medals. This includes 13 gold, 8 silver and 11 bronze. India finished fifth in the competition.

The 15th edition of the Commonwealth Games was held in the Canadian city of Victoria in 1994. India had won a total of 24 medals in this competition. These included 6 gold, 11 silver and 7 bronze. India got three golds in shooting and three in weightlifting.

India again showed strength in shooting in 1998

For the first time in the history of Commonwealth Games, any Commonwealth Games were held in Asia. The 16th edition of these games took place in 1998 in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia.

India got a total of 25 medals with 7 gold medals. India won four golds in shooting and three in weightlifting. Apart from 7 gold, India won a total of 25 medals, including 10 silver and 9 bronze.

In 2002, the Commonwealth Games were held in England and in this competition, India had performed better than the previous events. India emerged as a new sporting power, and with 30 gold medals, it finished one gold medal behind Canada. India won a total of 69 medals with 30 gold.

50 medals for India in Melbourne Commonwealth Games 2006

The 18th edition of the Commonwealth Games was held in Melbourne, Australia in 2006.

India got 50 medals in this competition along with 22 gold medals. India once again got the highest number of medals in shooting. Akhil Kumar of India won gold in boxing there. India got two gold in table tennis and three gold in weightlifting.

India got 17 silver and 11 bronze medals and India finished fourth.
