India’s entry in the Commonwealth Games in the year 1934

Since 1930, the Commonwealth Games have been held usually every four years. But it was not organized in 1942 and 1946 due to the Second World War.

After 1930, in 1934, the second Commonwealth Games i.e. British Empire Games were held in London. A total of 500 athletes from 16 countries including India participated in this edition.

These 16 countries were Australia, Bermuda, British Guiana, Canada, England, Northern Ireland, Newfound Land, New Zealand, Scotland, South Africa, Wales, India, Hong Kong, Jamaica, Zimbabwe and Trinidad.

However, India played under the British flag as India was then ruled by the British.

India participated in only two events wrestling and athletics.

Among the 17 countries, India opened its account with a bronze medal and remained in the 12th position.

India got two gold in Commonwealth Games 1958

Canada once again got the opportunity to organize the Commonwealth Games in 1954. The name of the competition held in the city of Vancouver was changed from British Empire Games to British Empire and Commonwealth Games.

Both India and Pakistan took part in it. This time also India’s account did not open. But in the year 1958, the Commonwealth Games held in Cardiff city of Wales helped a lot in giving India a new position in this competition.

In 1958, India won two gold and one silver medal.

India’s medal tally in the 1966 Commonwealth Games in double digits

In 1962, the Commonwealth Games were held in Perth, Australia, but India did not participate in this competition.

By the year 1966, the British Empire had formally ended, so this edition of the Commonwealth Games is known as the British Commonwealth Games.

This 1966 edition was held in the city of Kingston, Jamaica and a total of 34 countries took part in it.

India won three gold, four silver and three bronze medals in the competition.

All three gold medals of India came in wrestling. Vishambhar Singh won the gold in 57 kg category, Bhim Singh in 100 kg category and Mukhtar Singh in 68 kg category. India finished sixth in this competition.

In 1970, the 9th Commonwealth Games were held in Edinburgh, Scotland.

In true sense, the Commonwealth Games was first held in its own name in 1978. This was the 11th edition of the Commonwealth Games and was held in the Canadian city of Edmonton.

India’s performance remained the same. He won five medals each in Gold, Silver and Bronze. Kenya, New Zealand and Scotland also performed as before.

Prakash Padukone won gold in badminton

The 14th edition of the Commonwealth Games was held in the New Zealand city of Auckland in 1990. In this edition, India performed well, winning a total of 13 gold medals, including 12 gold medals in weightlifting. Indian players also made five new records in this.

Apart from weightlifting, a gold was won by Ashok Pandit in shooting.

India finished fifth in this edition by winning a total of 32 medals. This includes 13 gold, 8 silver and 11 bronze. India finished fifth in the competition.

The 15th edition of the Commonwealth Games was held in the Canadian city of Victoria in 1994. India had won a total of 24 medals in this competition. These included 6 gold, 11 silver and 7 bronze. India got three golds in shooting and three in weightlifting.

For the first time in the history of Commonwealth Games, any Commonwealth Games were held in Asia. The 16th edition of these games took place in 1998 in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia.

India got a total of 25 medals with 7 gold medals. India won four golds in shooting and three in weightlifting. Apart from 7 gold, India won a total of 25 medals, including 10 silver and 9 bronze.

Most successful Commonwealth Games ever for India
