IPL 2022: Shane Watson appointed assistant coach of Delhi Capitals, eager to learn from Ricky Ponting

New Delhi, March 15: Former Australia all-rounder Shane Watson on Tuesday confirmed that he will join Delhi Capitals as an assistant coach for the 2022 Indian Premier League. Watson took to social media and said that he is going to India to join Delhi Capitals before IPL 2022.

Shane Watson will join former teammate Ricky Ponting who will continue as the head coach of the Delhi franchise. Watson said in a video message that he is excited to start a new chapter in coaching and could not have had a better opportunity than learning from Ponting.

In a post on Instagram, Watson said, “Really excited to share the news that I am moving to India this week to begin my role as an assistant coach for Delhi Capitals. Change with my great partner Ricky Ponting. Can’t wait to get back in the room.”

“IPL is the best T20 tournament in the world. I have incredible memories as a player and now the coaching opportunities have come. To be able to work under the great Ricky Ponting. He was one of the best as captain. Amazing leader and now he is the best coach in the world.I am really excited to learn under Ricky.

“It’s time for Delhi Capitals to win their maiden title. They have a great team,” Watson said.

Watson was an integral part of Shane Warne’s title-winning Rajasthan Royals team in the first edition of the IPL. He played the league till 2020. Watson was instrumental in helping Chennai Super Kings win the IPL title in 2019.

Watson played 145 matches and scored 3874 runs including 4 centuries in his 13 year long career in IPL. He also took 92 wickets, proving to be one of the finest all-rounders to play in the league.

Delhi Capitals reached the finals in IPL 2020 and play-offs last year. The team will be hoping to continue its good run and go a step ahead in IPL 2022. The Rishabh Pant-led side will begin their campaign against 5-time champions Mumbai Indians on March 27.
