new Delhi. Suryakumar Yadav will not be available for Mumbai Indians’ opening match against Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. Mumbai Indians is scheduled to take place on March 27 at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. However, it looks like the five-time champion may have to take the field without his regular number-three batsman Suryakumar Yadav.

It is learned that 31-year-old Suryakumar is yet to recover from a hairline fracture on his thumb. He sustained the injury during the T20 series against West Indies last month. He was later ruled out of the T20I series against Sri Lanka. Although currently undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore, dark clouds are looming over his participation in the opening match.

A senior BCCI source was quoted as saying by the Times of India, “Surya is currently doing his rehabilitation at the NCA. He is on his way to recovery, but there is a possibility that his participation in the opening game will be a real touch-and-miss. There will be a case to go.” “Therefore there could be a possibility that he may be advised by the board’s medical team not to take the risk of playing as an opener,” he added. It is to be noted that Suryakumar is one of the four retentions made by the franchise ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction. He was picked ahead of the likes of Ishaan Kishan, Hardik Pandya and Kunal Pandya.

Hence, Mumbai should have high expectations from the flamboyant batsman. Fortunately for Mumbai Indians, Suryakumar is certain to take the field in Mumbai’s second match against Rajasthan Royals on April 2. As per the source, “I think from the second Mumbai match, he will be 100 per cent match fit. If he doesn’t play the first match then it is more likely to be a precautionary measure.”
