Bangalore, May 12: The Karnataka government on Thursday passed the controversial anti-conversion bill through an ordinance. The Cabinet cleared the ordinance on the Protection of Right to Freedom of Religion earlier today. The new law is meant to prevent conversion, either by force or through inducement.

No absolute majority in the Legislative Council

Earlier, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said that due to the adjournment of the Legislative Assembly and the Legislative Council, we will bring an ordinance to pass the bill in the cabinet meeting. The bill was initially passed in the Karnataka Assembly on December 23, 2021. But the BJP did not have an absolute majority in the Legislative Council. A cabinet meeting was held today to approve the ordinance. The BJP-led government had decided to bring an anti-conversion law through an ordinance. Because the ruling party does not have an absolute majority in the Upper House.

The Karnataka Protection of Right to Freedom of Religion Bill was passed in the Legislative Assembly in December 2021. It is pending for passage in the Legislative Council, where the ruling BJP government does not have an absolute majority. CM Bommai said that we are bringing the anti-conversion bill through an ordinance because the assembly is not in session. It will be presented in the cabinet.

Congress raised questions

Karnataka Congress chief DK Shivakumar has questioned the passage of the anti-conversion bill through an ordinance. He said that I do not know why the Karnataka government is in such a hurry. They should issue an ordinance on any development agenda or giving employment to the youth.
