The elephant’s mother, along with her trunk, walked around the day on Friday carrying the body of her child in the border areas of tea gardens in Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district. This heart-wrenching sight has gone viral on social media.

The elephant is seen struggling to carry her dead child with her trunk at Ambari Tea Estate. Initially, the elephant struggled to lift the body of her child. However, after a lot of effort, the mother went away with the child’s body and disappeared in the tea gardens.
The reason for the murder is not known
According to forest officials, the baby elephant had died on Friday morning at Chunabhati tea garden in Dooars area of Banarhat block. The mother picked up the child’s body with her trunk and walked from one tea garden to another with a herd of around 30-35 elephants.

Officials said that the herd of elephants covered a distance of more than 7 kms. Elephants from Chunabhati went to Ambari Tea Garden, Diana Tea Garden and Newdoers Tea Garden before placing the child’s body near a bush in Redbank Tea Garden.

Several teams of the state forest department reached the spot, however, till Friday evening, they were neither able to recover the carcass nor took the bereaved elephant to the forest. The cause of death is yet to be ascertained.
Keeping a close eye on the situation
Officials said that at present, forest personnel are in the area and are keeping a close watch on the situation. According to the World Wildlife Fund, North Bengal is an important habitat, with about 400 resident elephants.
