According to forest officials, the baby elephant had died on Friday morning at Chunabhati tea garden in Dooars area of ​​Banarhat block. The mother picked up the child’s body with her trunk and walked from one tea garden to another with a herd of around 30-35 elephants.

Officials said that the herd of elephants covered a distance of more than 7 kms. Elephants from Chunabhati went to Ambari Tea Garden, Diana Tea Garden and Newdoers Tea Garden before placing the child’s body near a bush in Redbank Tea Garden.

Several teams of the state forest department reached the spot, however, till Friday evening, they were neither able to recover the carcass nor took the bereaved elephant to the forest. The cause of death is yet to be ascertained.
