New Delhi, August 08:
Muharram is the first month of the Hijri or Islamic calendar. This month is considered the second holiest month after Ramadan, and one of the four holy months of the year when war is forbidden. Muharram is a time of worship and penance.

Ashura is the tenth day of Muharram. For Sunni Muslims, Ashura is the day of fasting, separating Moses and his followers from hunger and thirst throughout the day to show their gratitude to Allah.

According to Islam, Prophet Muhammad has called the month of Muharram as the ‘Holy Month of Allah’. This year the month of Muharram in India has started from 31st July. Ashura starts from the evening of 7th August and ends on 8th August this year.

People of Muslim society refrain from wearing new and fashionable clothes and even getting married or engaged, especially on the day of Ashura. People go to the mosques to offer prayers. During Muharram a religious ritual called Nohas is recited.
