Operation Romeo Review: A romantic-thriller on an important subject, strong performance

The story makes you think

The special thing about the film is that it has been successful in creating tension. When Aditya and Neha go out for a date, you have an idea from the very beginning that something is going to happen to them now.. You know their every move is taking them towards an accident, but still you are afraid for them. Huh. You want to know how they would react in that situation.

The film talks on many issues at once

The director has maintained this tension in the first half of the film. Based on the original story of Ratheesh Ravi and scripted by Arshad Syed, Operation Romeo not only talks about moral policing, but also talks about the “male ego” an important part of the film. When Neha and Aditya break free from the clutches of the police, the first question he asks- “What did he do to you? I need to know as a man..” This is where the confusion begins in the film’s message.

The story wanders in the second half

On one hand the director wants to educate and inspire the audience by introducing the issue of moral policing while giving the shape of a thriller to a love story. In several scenes in the first half, he shows how unsafe the world is still for women. But the duality of Aditya’s character also adds other issues like patriarchy, feminism to the film. After which the story moves away from the original message.

Strong sides are its artists

Also, what was a Malayalam film was a small town story, when the producer-director combines issues like moral policing with a metropolis like Mumbai, the story expects a little more maturity.

The strong side of the film is its actors. In his first film as a main lead, Siddhant Gupta has revealed that he is a talented actor. The director has given the best arc to his character and Siddhant has played the role with utmost sincerity. Vedika’s screen time is very less, but she looks comfortable on screen. Bhumika Chawla’s presence looks good. On the other hand, Sharad Kelkar and Kishor Kadam are so ingrained in their characters that you will not be able to live without hating them.

How a road trip changes lives.. This genre has been made in the past like Anushka Sharma’s NH-10. Operation Romeo starts in this direction, the film also binds you in a strong way, but gets confused somewhere in conveying the right message. 3 stars for “Operation Romeo” from Filmibeat.
