India has expressed concern over the passage of a resolution brought by Pakistan in the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday to celebrate ‘International Day to Combat Islamophobia’.

India has said that fear about a particular religion has reached such a level that the situation has come to celebrate International Day for it. India has said that fear is being created in different ways regarding religions, especially against Hindus, Buddhism and Sikhism.

Pakistan’s ambassador to the 193-member United Nations General Assembly, Munir Akram, had proposed that March 15 be celebrated as ‘International Day to Combat Islamophobia’ i.e. ‘International Day of Fight Against Fear of Islam’.

According to the report of the news agency PTI, this proposal of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation has been approved by Afghanistan, Bangladesh, China, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Libya, Malaysia, Maldives, Mali, Pakistan, It was supported by Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Uganda, the United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan and Yemen.

Responding to the passage of this resolution, India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations TS Tirumurti told the General Assembly that India hopes that this resolution will not become a precedent. After this proposal, many proposals can come about fear towards other religions and the United Nations can turn into religious camps.

India’s side

He said, “1.2 billion people follow Hinduism. There are 535 million people who follow Buddhism and more than 30 million Sikhs are spread across the world. It’s time we spread towards all religions instead of one religion.” Understand the atmosphere of fear.”

“The United Nations must stand above religious matters that can divide us, rather than seeing the world as one family and bringing us together on a platform of peace and harmony.”

After the passage of this resolution, Tirumurti said that India condemns any activity being done against Judaism, Christianity and Islam. But the atmosphere of fear is not being spread only about these religions.

He said, “There is in fact evidence that this kind of fear of religions has affected religions other than Jews, Christians and Muslims. The atmosphere of fear has increased.”

He also pointed out that the member countries of the United Nations should not forget that in 2019, 22 August is already celebrated in the memory of those killed in the violence in the name of religion. This day completely encompasses all the aspects.

What else did Tirumurti say…

TS Tirumurti said, “Even on November 16, the International Day of Tolerance is celebrated. We do not agree that we need to celebrate an international day against fear of any particular religion.”

He emphasized that such fear of religions has led to incidents of attacks on religious places such as gurudwaras, Buddhist monasteries and temples in many countries and misinformation and hatred about religions other than Judaism, Islam and Christianity. has grown.

He also cited examples of several incidents like the demolition of Buddhist statue in Bamiyan, Afghanistan, desecration of Gurudwara, massacre of Sikhs, attacks on temples, attempts to justify incidents like demolition of statues in temples.

TS Tirumurti said that due to such incidents, the atmosphere of fear towards the people of non-Jewish, Christian and Islam religions has increased nowadays.

After the resolution was passed in the General Assembly, Tirumurti issued a statement saying, “It is in this context that we are concerned that the International Day against Fear of any one religion is being observed except for other religions. It is one thing to celebrate, but it is quite another to celebrate a day to fight against hatred of one religion. This resolution undermines the seriousness of fear against other religions.”

He said that India is proud of the fact that diversity is the foundation of its existence.

“We believe in equal protection and promotion of all religions. Therefore it is unfortunate that the word ‘diversity’ is not even mentioned in this resolution and the countries which have brought this resolution have rejected our amendment proposal. Did not consider it necessary to include this word through which only those people would understand.

Tirumurti said that being a diverse and democratic country, India has been home to many religions for centuries. India has given shelter to people who are victims of oppression in the name of religion all over the world.

He said, “Such people have got safe haven in India. Be they Parsis or Buddhists or Jews or people of any other religion.”

He expressed deep concern over the increasing incidents of violence, intolerance and discrimination against people of different religions in different parts of the world.

French statement

Nicolas de Rivire, the Permanent Representative of France to the United Nations, spoke at the General Assembly after Tirumurti. He said that this resolution does not answer the concerns related to our common fight against all forms of discrimination.

“Without mentioning the freedom to profess or not to believe in religion, by giving preference to one religion over other religions, this resolution divides the ongoing fight against religious intolerance,” he said.

Nicolas de Rivire said that there are all kinds of people in society. Many of these people believe in different religions or they do not believe in any.
