New Delhi, March 19: 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer is offering financial aid to school children in Ukraine amid Russia’s invasion. The veteran player gave this information on Friday.

Federer said he would donate USD 500,000 (Indian Rupees 3,79,73,325) through his foundation to “establish access to continuing schooling for Ukrainian children”.

Russia invaded Ukraine on 24 February and attacked schools, hospitals and buildings where people sought protection in various cities.

“My family and I are horrified to see photos from Ukraine and heartbroken for the innocent people who have been so badly affected,” Federer wrote.

“We stand for peace.”

“We will provide assistance to children in Ukraine who need care, with approximately 6 million Ukrainian children currently out of school and we know this is a very important time to provide access to education and this extremely painful Would like to support them to cope with the experience.

Through the Roger Federer Foundation, we will support War Child Holland with a donation of $500,000 to establish access to continuing schooling for Ukrainian children.”

Federer and his wife are parents to two twins. The Swiss legend has not played since his quarter-final exit at Wimbledon 2021 as he withdrew from the US Open due to a knee injury.

Another former No. 1 tennis player, three-time major champion Andy Murray, announced on March 8 that he would donate earnings from his prize money for the rest of the year to help children in Ukraine.
