New Delhi, March 27. Three names have been selected by the search and selection committee headed by Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan for the post of Director of AIIMS, which will be placed before the apex decision-making body of the institute on March 29. Once approved by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) body, these names will be sent to the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for final consent.

The three names that have been selected include Dr. Nikhil Tandon, Head of Endocrinology Department of AIIMS, Dr. Rajesh Malhotra, Head of AIIMS Trauma Center and Head of Orthopedic Department and Department of Gastroenterology at the Institute. Including Professor Dr. Pramod Garg. One of them will replace Randeep Guleria, the current director of AIIMS. The four-member committee had received applications from 32 doctors, including 12 doctors, from within the institute for the post. Dr. Randeep Guleria’s term ended on March 24, but his term has been extended for 3 months till a new director is elected.

Apart from Rajesh Bhushan, the committee which has been entrusted with the selection of names for the post of AIIMS Director, Department of Biotechnology, Rajesh S Gokhale, Principal Scientific Adviser to the government, K. Vijay Raghavan and Delhi University Vice Chancellor Yogesh Singh. They held a meeting on Tuesday and selected three names. “These three names will be placed before the AIIMS body for approval on March 29 and then to the ACC, headed by the Prime Minister, for final approval,” an official source said.

The tenure of Dr. Randeep Guleria, Director of AIIMS, New Delhi, has been extended by three months. His term was to end on March 24. He was appointed to the post on 28 March 2017.
Around 32 candidates had applied for the post of Director of AIIMS. These include ICMR Director General Balram Bhargava as well as 13 doctors of AIIMS.
