Senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad on Monday received the Padma Bhushan award in the field of public affairs. President Ram Nath Kovind gave this honor to Ghulam Nabi Azad with his own hands. Let us inform that on the evening of 26 January this year, the Government of India had announced to confer Padma Bhushan to Ghulam Nabi Azad and Padma Shri in view of the work of Sanskrit scholar Professor Shastri.

This year, a total of 128 Padma Awards are being conferred, which includes two doubles cases (in a doubles case, the award counts as one). This year four Padma Vibhushan, 17 Padma Bhushan and 107 Padma Shri will be given. The 34 awardees are women and the list also includes 10 persons from the category of Foreigners/NRIs/PIOs/OCIs and 13 posthumous awardees. The second civil decoration ceremony is scheduled to be held on March 28.

Prominent awardees include Padma Vibhushan recipient General Rawat (posthumously) and late Chairman of Geeta Press Radhe Shyam, Padma Bhushan awardee Ghulam Nabi Azad, Punjabi folk singer Gurmeet Bawa (posthumously), Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran, former CAG Rajiv Mehrishi, Covishield producer Cyrus Poonawalla is also involved. The ‘Padma Vibhushan’ is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service; ‘Padma Bhushan’ is given for distinguished service of high order and ‘Padma Shri’ is given for distinguished service in any field. The awards are announced every year on the eve of Republic Day.
