Tamil Nadu: SC rejects the decision of 10% reservation for Venniyar

New Delhi, 31 March. The Supreme Court has withdrawn the Tamil Nadu government’s decision to provide 10.5% reservation to the Venniyar community. The Tamil Nadu government had decided to give most backward community reservation to Venniyar in government jobs and educational institutions, but now the Supreme Court has quashed this decision. A bench of Justices L Nageswara Rao and BR Gavli upheld the Madras High Court’s decision and set aside the reservation for Venniers.

The court said that we are of the view that there is no strong ground that Vanniakula Kshatriyas should be included in the 115 MBC group. Therefore, the 2021 Act is a violation of Articles 14, 15, 16 of the Constitution. Therefore, we uphold the High Court’s decision. The Tamil Nadu Assembly had in February last year passed a bill to give 10.5 per cent reservation to Venniyar by the AIADMK government. The Venniyars were earlier known as Vanniyakula Kshatriyas.
