One of the most prestigious film festivals in the world, the Cannes Film Festival is held annually in the French city of Cannes. And among all the countries, India has had a significant presence at the renowned Film Festival. Indian films have been screened regularly and have won several awards at the festival.

So, as we gear up to witness the 76th edition of the coveted event, we bring to you a list of ten Indian films that won international accolades.

“Neecha Nagar” (1946)
Directed by Chetan Anand, this was the first Indian film to win the Palme d’Or at Cannes.

“Do Bigha Zamin” (1953)
– Directed by Bimal Roy, this film won the Prix International award at Cannes.

“Salaam Bombay!” (1988)
– Directed by Mira Nair, the film was awarded the Caméra d’Or (Golden Camera) award at Cannes.

“Bandit Queen” (1994)
– Directed by Shekhar Kapur, this film was screened in the Directors’ Fortnight section at Cannes and won the Prix du Publique (Audience Award).

“Lagaan” (2001)
– Directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, this film was screened in the non-competition section and won a standing ovation from the audience.

“The Lunchbox” (2013)
– Directed by Ritesh Batra, this film won the Grand Rail d’Or and the Critics Week Viewers Choice Award at Cannes.

“Titli” (2014)
Directed by Kanu Behl, this film was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes and won the Gan Foundation Award.

“Masaan” (2015)
– Directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, this film won the FIPRESCI Prize (International Federation of Film Critics Prize) in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes.

“A Night Of Knowing Nothing” (2021) –
Directed by Payal Kapadia, this documentary won the Oeil d’Or for the Best Documentary at Cannes 2021.

“All That Breathes” (2022)
Directed by Shaunak Sen, the film had its premiere at the Cannes in the Special Screening segment. The film was honored with the 2022 L’OEil d’Or award.
