New Delhi, March 16: Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar believes that Anil Kumble’s record is far away but Ravichandran Ashwin can get close to it. Ashwin recently broke the record held by the legendary Kapil Dev and is now India’s second highest Test wicket-taker after Kumble. Kumble has 619 wickets to his name while Ashwin has taken 442 wickets at this time and he is 35 years old now.

Talking to Star Sports, Gavaskar said that, this record is still far away, we are still talking about 160 wickets away. But Ashwin is able to do that because he keeps getting better.

Ashwin also became the first man to take 100 wickets in a World Test Championship cycle.

Ashwin and Jasprit Bumrah were most effective in the pink ball Test, with the off-spinner taking 6 wickets and the latter taking 8 wickets, including Bumrah’s first 5 wickets in home conditions.

Gavaskar feels that Ashwin and Bumrah are similar in their bowling approach.

Gavaskar said, “Jasprit Bumrah is just like Ashwin. He always wants to add something to his account. That’s what Ashwin does. At one point in time a year and a half ago, Ashwin was trying leg-spin as you bowl a variety of deliveries. can.”

“He’s not afraid to experiment. Yes, he can hit, that’s the nature of the game. But the fact is he’s doing something different and wants to create doubts in the batsman’s mind. He and Bumrah in that aspect Equals, aggressive bowlers want to get wickets. They don’t get happy with easy wickets, they want to make sure they get the batsmen out by trapping them.”
